Cork, Ireland — A woman narrowly escaped serious injury during a violent encounter in Cork City, where she was attacked and nearly struck in the face with a broken bottle. The man charged in the incident, Robert Nachtygal, 39, is facing sentencing on October 30 at Cork Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to assault with intent to cause bodily harm.
The attack occurred on October 23, 2023, around 9:30 p.m. on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street. According to evidence presented in court, Nachtygal pinned the 35-year-old victim against a wall and assaulted her with repeated punches to the face and head. The assault ceased only when a passerby intervened.
Following this initial confrontation, the woman walked away but soon returned to the scene. Authorities say that Nachtygal seized her hair, dragged her towards a nearby vehicle, and again pinned her against it. During this second attack, Nachtygal brandished the neck of a broken Smirnoff vodka bottle in a threatening manner, allegedly attempting to stab her.
The victim raised her hand in defense, receiving multiple cuts to her wrist and hand in the process. Reports indicate that she suffered a significant gash that resulted in heavy bleeding. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing case.
Garda Kevin Roche, who charged Nachtygal, emphasized the seriousness of the assault, highlighting its violent nature. Sergeant Dave Delea provided details of the incident during preliminary hearings, drawing attention to the disturbing aggression exhibited by the accused.
