Crawley, England — A police community support officer has been hospitalized following a brutal assault while responding to a call about suspicious activity. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on May 29, when the officer approached a man in the Broadfield Barton area. In a sudden act of violence, he was struck multiple times in the face.
Bystanders quickly intervened, helping to subdue the attacker until additional law enforcement arrived on the scene. The injured officer has since been admitted to a local hospital, where he is being treated for a suspected broken nose.
Superintendent Imran Asghar of Sussex Police characterized the assault as “totally deplorable.” He highlighted the dedication of emergency workers who risk their safety to serve the community. “Assaults on emergency personnel will not be tolerated. Our officers come to work to protect the public—not to be assaulted,” Asghar stated. He expressed gratitude to the citizens who stepped in during the chaotic moment, emphasizing that their actions were instrumental in the swift arrest of the suspect.
A 26-year-old man from Crawley has been taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and is currently awaiting further questioning. Authorities have not released his name.
In a related matter, police are investigating a separate report from the same evening involving an individual reportedly seen with a firearm in the Broadfield area. Despite extensive searches conducted by armed officers, no suspects related to this second report have been identified.
