MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A local man was convicted of first-degree murder after fatally shooting his father-in-law at a traffic stop, court records in Manatee County reveal. Ruben Pioquinto, who could face life in prison, was found guilty also of aggravated assault following the January 2022 incident, which involved threatening his teenage brother-in-law under duress to aid in disposing of the body.
The confrontation took a deadly turn when Pioquinto, while stopped at a red light, used a handgun to mortally wound Anderson Guerra Rivera, who was in the passenger seat of the car. The incident unfolded with Pioquinto inquiring from Rivera if he feared death, to which Rivera reportedly responded “No” before being shot.
Following the shooting, authorities stated that Pioquinto drove to a remote area in Palmetto. There he allegedly coerced his 15-year-old brother-in-law at gunpoint to remove Rivera’s body from the vehicle and abandon it alongside 77th Street East.
The harrowing ordeal extended well beyond the murder with Pioquinto threatening the teenager for over an hour, prosecutors indicated. He purportedly warned the minor that he would kill his family if he disclosed the day’s events.
