Birmingham, Ala. — A series of violent episodes that rocked Birmingham from July through September are believed to have been significantly influenced by one man, Damien McDaniel, according to local police. Investigators assert that McDaniel was involved in incidents accounting for roughly 30% of the city’s homicides during that period.
Authorities have recently indicted McDaniel in connection with a high-profile mass shooting at Trendsetters Lounge, where a birthday celebration tragically ended with four people dead and ten others wounded. Another suspect, Hatarius Woods, was also implicated in this attack and has been apprehended by law enforcement as of Tuesday.
The deadly spree attributed to McDaniel did not conclude with the Trendsetters incident. On August 13, both McDaniel and Woods are suspected of fatally shooting Charlie Moore in the course of a burglary. The wave of violence continued into September, peaking with a horrific attack outside a lounge in the Five Points South neighborhood, where McDaniel allegedly killed four more individuals and injured 17.
In total, from July through September, police linked McDaniel to the deaths of 11 people and the injuries of 30 others. His arrest on October 16 marked a significant breakthrough in the case, bringing some hope of justice for the affected families.
With the recent indictments and Woods’ arrest, Officer Truman Fitzgerald noted that the investigations into some of these homicides are examining the possibility of murder-for-hire elements, signaling the complexity and depth of the ongoing investigation.
