MONTECITO, Calif. — A man from Nevada was arrested Wednesday after a violent incident that left a woman seriously injured at a residence linked to Ty Warner, known for creating the iconic Beanie Babies toy line.
Russell Maxwell Phay, 43, was taken into custody after a standoff with law enforcement that unfolded at Warner’s home on Fairway Road. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 4:30 p.m. about a possible theft or home invasion at the upscale property.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered a woman with severe injuries outside the residence. Emergency responders quickly transported her to the hospital for treatment. They soon learned that the suspect was still inside, raising concerns about the safety of any other individuals who might be present.
Law enforcement agencies, including the California Highway Patrol and Santa Barbara Police, established a perimeter around the home. The Special Enforcement Team and Crisis Negotiation Team utilized armored vehicles as they prepared for a possible emergency situation.
Once officers confirmed that no one else was inside, they located Phay barricaded in an upstairs bathroom. As negotiations failed to yield a peaceful resolution, Phay attempted to evade capture by jumping out of a second-story window. Deputies and a K9 unit were quick to apprehend him upon his descent.
Phay, who is a combat veteran, has previously made alarming statements regarding his military training. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Santa Barbara County Main Jail, facing multiple felony charges that include burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping, along with a misdemeanor charge of obstruction. The court set his bail at $100,000.

Authorities have not disclosed the relationship between Phay and the victim, who is currently recovering from her injuries in the hospital.
