Bhubaneswar, India — A violent attack on Ratnakar Sahoo, the Additional Commissioner of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, has ignited significant outrage in Odisha, leading to allegations that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is behind the incident. On June 30, 2025, during a public hearing, Sahoo was violently removed from his office and severely assaulted by individuals thought to be affiliated with BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan.
The brutal assault drew immediate condemnation from members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) at a press conference held at Sankha Bhawan. Among those speaking out were BJD leaders such as Bhubaneswar District President Ashok Panda, BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, and MLAs Ananta Narayan Jena and Sushant Rout. They characterized the incident as “barbaric” and reminiscent of “British-era atrocities,” calling for the swift arrest of all involved, including those believed to be the instigators.
“This constitutes a gangster-like act that brings shame upon Odisha,” Panda said, asserting that the incident reflects a significant deterioration in public safety under the BJP’s governance. Mayor Das highlighted that although five attackers had been apprehended, there were still unanswered questions about the involvement of others, urging the application of strict legal measures against all parties implicated.
In reaction to the incident, the Odisha Administrative Service Association planned to stage a mass leave protest; however, the move was postponed after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assured action would be taken against the attackers. The violent encounter, which was recorded on CCTV, involved BJP corporator Jeevan Rout along with several others, who now face serious legal charges.
The BJP has suspended five of its members, including Rout, while Pradhan has denied any personal role in the assault, asserting his innocence amidst claims of political maneuvering against him. This has stirred unrest, with BJD supporters and BMC staff staging blockades on Janpath Road to voice their dissent.
Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik remarked on social media that he was horrified by the incident and called for decisive actions to restore public confidence in governance. The ongoing police investigation into the violent event has kept it at the forefront of political discourse, challenging the Majhi administration’s dedication to ensuring justice.
As authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the assault, the situation remains a pivotal test for the current government, affecting both public sentiment and political dynamics within the state.
