Beloved Youth Football Coach Shot and Killed in Alleged Road Rage Incident, Family Still Searching for Answers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The family of a beloved youth football coach is still seeking answers a year after he was fatally shot in an alleged road rage incident. Richard Donnell Hamilton was killed while leaving I-65 at County Line Road in Greenwood on Jan. 11, 2023.

Tiffany Hamilton, the widow of Richard, expressed her ongoing pain and quest for closure in the wake of the tragedy. She tearfully stated that no one should have to witness the death of their loved one.

Richard Hamilton was the founder of the Indy Youth Steelers, a youth football team, and played a significant role in launching the Tarkington Teen Work Crew, a program empowering young people to become leaders through the MLK Center.

Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities recently identified a newer model silver Mazda with dark tinted windows as the suspect vehicle. Police believe that the shooter targeted Richard’s van as they both exited I-65 northbound.

The Indiana State Police acknowledged the difficulty in solving such cases due to factors such as the lack of gathered details and the ever-changing nature of the crime scene. Out of nearly 300 road rage incidents in the past year, only seven arrests were made as of late December. Tiffany Hamilton appealed for anyone with information to come forward, urging the perpetrator to take responsibility for their actions.

The family and community continue to mourn Richard Donnell Hamilton’s untimely death as they await progress in the investigation. Those with details about the incident are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477 (TIPS).
