Bedroom Break-In Ends in Gunfire as Woman Fights Off Intruder

State police said the wounded man now faces felony charges after a late-night confrontation inside a Fayette County house.

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. — A 69-year-old man was shot multiple times after police said he broke into a Fayette County home late Tuesday night, leading to a struggle with the woman inside and a criminal case against him.

Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were sent to a house near 18th Street and Water Street in Brownsville Borough at about 11:30 p.m. for a reported disturbance. When they arrived, they found Ronald Rosiek of Hopwood wounded and later learned he had been flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh for emergency surgery. Investigators said the woman inside the home was not charged, and troopers said the state’s castle doctrine applied.

According to investigators, the case began when the woman heard someone beating on her door Tuesday night. Police said Rosiek then broke a window to get inside and made his way into the woman’s bedroom. Troopers said she told him to leave, but he kept moving toward her. Investigators said she fired once, striking him in the leg. When he continued advancing, police said, she fired again and hit him in the side of the head. A struggle followed inside the house before the woman was able to get out as troopers reached the scene.

Rosiek was later charged with aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespassing, according to court records cited by local reports. State police did not release his condition after surgery by early Thursday. Troopers also have not publicly said what led him to the house or whether he knew the woman before the encounter. Investigators have described the case as a break-in that turned violent inside a private home, and they said the woman’s account and the physical scene are part of the ongoing review. Police have not announced any other arrests.

The location is in Brownsville Borough, a Monongahela River town in Fayette County southeast of Pittsburgh. By Wednesday morning, troopers were still working around the home as neighbors and relatives tried to piece together what had happened overnight. The case quickly drew attention because it involved a homeowner using a gun during what police said was a forced entry into a bedroom. Under Pennsylvania’s castle doctrine, people may use force in limited circumstances when they believe it is needed to protect themselves in their homes. State police said that doctrine applies in this case.

The investigation remains with the Pennsylvania State Police station in Belle Vernon and its criminal investigation unit. Court proceedings for Rosiek are expected to follow once his medical condition allows. Troopers have not released a timetable for a preliminary hearing or said whether additional charges could be considered. They also have not said whether forensic testing, witness interviews or new records could change the public account. For now, the woman is being treated as the person who defended herself during the alleged break-in, while Rosiek is the only person charged.

The scene left relatives shaken. The woman’s brother told CBS Pittsburgh he feared the worst when he first heard there had been a shooting at the home. Then, he said, an officer told him, “No, she took care of business.” He added that his sister had “got beat up a little bit,” but survived the confrontation. That short exchange captured the tension of the night: a pounding at the door, a shattered window, gunfire inside a house and a family learning that the woman at the center of it had made it out alive.

As of Thursday morning, Rosiek remained hospitalized after emergency surgery, and the criminal case was moving forward while state police continued to gather evidence and seek any additional information.
