Bay Area Teens Triumph Amid Iowa Bomb Scare

DES MOINES, IA – High school students from the Bay Area have returned home safely following a distressing incident at a national speech and debate competition in Iowa. The event was thrown into turmoil when a man stormed the stage, causing a panic with claims of having a bomb.

The students, including 30 from Bellarmine College Preparatory, recounted their experience at San Jose International Airport. They expressed relief and spoke about the resilience they developed through the ordeal.

Oliver Chen, a participant who secured fourth place in original oratory, described the chaos that ensued when the competition was interrupted. “I was terrified, constantly looking back in fear,” he recalled.

Some students believed there was an active shooter, adding to the chaos as hundreds scrambled to evacuate. The scene was described as a frenzied stampede.

In addition to Bellarmine, students from James Logan and Leland High Schools were present. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

Police later arrested 22-year-old Jayden Rochefort, charging him with disorderly conduct and drug possession. Enhanced security measures, including metal detectors, were implemented, allowing the tournament to resume.

Aaron Langerman, Bellarmine’s debate coach, commended the students for their poise. “They regrouped and focused on preparing for the final rounds,” he said.

This incident highlighted the unpredictable nature of public events and the necessity for emergency readiness. Despite the disruption, the students celebrated their accomplishments and the solidarity formed through the experience.

Returning with their trophies, the students embraced not only their achievements but also the resilience and unity gained from overcoming a daunting challenge.
