Baltimore Police Officer Faces No Bail in Teen Rape Case

BALTIMORE, MD – A Baltimore police officer finds himself embroiled in a legal battle after being accused of raping a 16-year-old girl. Kerlin Edwards, 34, was denied bail by a judge due to the serious nature of the charges against him.

Having been with the police force for over two years, Edwards now faces allegations of rape, assault, and unlawful detention. The charges have led to his suspension without pay as the case progresses through the courts.

According to court documents, Edwards acknowledged an intimate relationship with the teen. The girl reported that Edwards accused her of cheating, leading to a violent altercation. She claims he strangled her until she lost consciousness and then locked her in to prevent her from leaving.

Edwards allegedly handed his unloaded duty weapon to the teenager, daring her to shoot him, which he described as deserving. A public defender’s request for his release, citing safety concerns due to his occupation, was rejected by the judge.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott applauded the judicial system for its impartiality, stressing the seriousness of the allegations, especially given Edwards’ position as a law enforcement officer.

The case has drawn significant attention, underscoring ongoing concerns about accountability within the police department. The preliminary hearing is set for four weeks from now, where more evidence will be presented.
