NEW YORK, NY – A 13-year-old boy with autism is on the mend after suffering a brutal assault in Harlem that left him with a broken jaw. The young victim was targeted by a group of teenagers who attacked him for his sneakers, according to police reports.
The incident occurred last Wednesday as the boy was returning home from school. He was approached by three teenagers near the intersection of 134th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue. The assailants punched and kicked him, ultimately stealing his shoes and a Nike mask.
The boy’s injuries are severe. His jaw is broken in two places, requiring a permanent metal plate in his mouth. Doctors are still determining if an additional rod will need to remain. The seventh grader, who has lost two front teeth, is currently on a liquid diet as part of his recovery.
