Elsmere, Ky. — Authorities in Northern Kentucky are intensifying their search for a murder weapon linked to the shooting death of a teenage girl. Tristan Smith, just 15 years old, was killed on July 21. In connection with her death, another teenager has been taken into custody, but the firearm used in the incident has yet to be recovered.
Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders voiced his concern over the case, emphasizing the troubling reality that a teenager had access to a gun. “It’s very disturbing that a 15-year-old had access to a gun, much less had a gun,” he remarked. The shooting occurred inside the bedroom of the suspect at a residence on Autumn Road, raising questions about the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Despite conducting a thorough investigation, Elsmere police have been unable to locate the weapon. “I know that Elsmere police did an exhaustive search in the neighborhood and surrounding areas where the shooting took place,” Sanders explained. He expressed skepticism about whether the gun was ever in the immediate vicinity, suggesting that it might have been hidden or given to someone else.
Sanders is now urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the suspect’s actions following the shooting. The suspect has not disclosed his whereabouts after the incident, only indicating that he contacted his mother from a blocked number. “I believe there are likely others who interacted with him who might know what he did with the firearm,” Sanders theorized.
To facilitate the recovery of the gun, the Commonwealth Attorney has implored anyone with knowledge about the incident to reach out to Elsmere police. “People who provide information can not only assist in the investigation but may also protect themselves from facing potential charges,” he noted.
Local residents are encouraged to call Elsmere police at 859-356-3191 if they possess any pertinent information. Additionally, Sanders indicated that the 15-year-old suspect could potentially face trial as an adult. A request for transfer has already been submitted by the prosecuting team to pursue this course of action.
The investigation continues as law enforcement remains focused on ensuring justice for Smith and addressing broader concerns about youth access to firearms. The community is hopeful that new information will lead to the recovery of the weapon and provide clarity on a tragic event that has left many in shock.
