COBLESKILL, N.Y.—In a renewed push to solve a cold case spanning nearly five decades, New York State Police are appealing to the public for assistance in the 1974 murder of Katherine Kolodziej. The college student’s unresolved death continues to haunt the community of Cobleskill, where she was last seen alive.
Kolodziej, then a 17-year-old freshman at the State University of New York at Cobleskill, vanished after an evening at a local tavern on November 2, 1974. After failing to return to her dormitory, her roommate reported her missing, triggering an extensive search. It wasn’t until November 28, nearly four weeks later, that the grim discovery of her body was made in a remote wooded area off McDonald Road in Richmondville, just five miles from the tavern.
Authorities were able to determine that Kolodziej had been killed, but despite extensive investigations, no suspects were ever apprehended. The exact circumstances surrounding her death have remained shrouded in mystery, sparking intrigue and a myriad of unanswered questions over the years.
The State Police Troop G Major Crimes Unit, alongside officers from SP Princetown, have continuously worked on the case, trying to bring closure to a community rattled by the unsettling nature of the crime. Investigators have followed numerous leads and explored various angles but still need more information that could lead to a breakthrough.
The technological advancements in forensic science and investigative techniques over the past several years have provided new tools in the fight against unresolved cases like Kolodziej’s. However, law enforcement officials emphasize that community input is crucial and often the key to solving cold cases.
Officials are urging anyone who might have information, regardless of how minor it seems, to come forward. Insights from the public not only could help progress the investigation but also aid in delivering justice for Katherine Kolodziej and her grieving family, who have waited for decades.
Detectives are specifically interested in hearing from individuals who were in or around the Cobleskill area in the early 1970s or might have frequented the Vault Tavern. Memories of unusual occurrences or previously unreported sightings could prove invaluable to the case.
For those wishing to help, New York State Police have provided contact details. Information can be sent via email to Crimetip@troopers.ny.gov or by calling directly at 518-457-6811.
In urging the public’s help, officials remain hopeful that even the smallest bit of new information could lead to solving Kathryn Kolodziej’s murder, proving that justice, despite the passage of time, remains within reach.
