Aurora, Illinois — A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed violence stemming from a stabbing incident earlier this year. Duka M. Smith’s conviction followed a violent altercation that occurred on November 12, 2023, in an apartment where he and his victim were present.
During the court proceedings, Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland described the incident as a brutal and prolonged attack initiated by Smith during a disagreement. The conflict escalated when Smith began stabbing the victim repeatedly, leaving him severely injured. Surveillance footage captured the horrifying sequence of events as Smith pursued his victim outside into the parking lot.
According to investigators, the attack intensified as the victim attempted to escape. Despite sustaining multiple stab wounds to critical areas, including his head, abdomen, and chest, the victim managed to flee to a nearby location, where he was discovered by authorities. Fortunately, he has since made a recovery.
Orland emphasized the seriousness of Smith’s actions, noting that violence is never an acceptable means of conflict resolution. She expressed appreciation for the victim’s bravery and resilience throughout the ordeal.
