Phoenix, AZ — In a harrowing incident early Monday, a local man suffered a violent attack that left him with life-altering injuries, including the loss of an eye. The attack happened around 1 a.m. as the man was walking on a Phoenix street.
According to authorities, the victim, whose name has not been disclosed, was simply making polite conversation when he greeted a passerby with a, “How are you doing?” This seemingly harmless interaction took a horrific turn when the passerby, identified as 39-year-old Daniel Lanks, allegedly attacked the man from behind in an unprovoked assault.
The confrontation escalated quickly, with Lanks accused of brutally assaulting the victim and forcibly removing his right eyeball from its socket. The victim managed to escape and run to his home despite his severe injuries.
Upon his arrival at home, his girlfriend promptly called 911. First responders arriving at the scene were met with a grisly sight; the victim held a towel over his face, and upon its removal, they discovered his eyeball completely dislodged, hanging down his face. Medical personnel also noted that the victim had sustained a fractured jaw during the attack.
Police took Lanks into custody later that day, and he has since been charged with felony aggravated assault. Held at the Maricopa County jail, Lanks is currently detained on a $500,000 cash bond. It was noted that Lanks had been released from jail just two days prior to this violent encounter.
