Amherst, OH — A touching memorial was recently held at Powers Elementary School for 9-year-old Alex Louks who tragically lost his life in a domestic incident at his home, which also claimed the life of his mother, Risa Louks. The small Ohio community of Amherst came together, along with teachers and first responders, to honor and remember the young life that brought joy and kindness to so many.
The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office reported that on November 20, after responding to a house fire in Amherst Township, authorities discovered the bodies of Alex and his mother. It is believed that the fire was set by Risa Louks, who subsequently took the life of her son and then her own. This heartbreaking event occurred mere days before a custody hearing involving Alex’s parents, which had been scheduled for November 25 following a filing by Alex’s father, Guy Louks, in Henry County, Indiana.
The memorial at the school featured heartfelt tributes from those who knew Alex best. Julie Hammond, a math teacher at Powers Elementary, fondly remembered Alex’s vibrant storytelling, particularly about his old family dog, which he affectionately referred to as a puppy. “He just loved to tell stories and play tag with his friends at recess,” Hammond said.
Brian Teppner, the principal of Powers Elementary, shared his memories of Alex’s boundless love for all creatures. “Alex loved animals, big or small. I recall a time when he brought worms into the classroom to ensure their safety and well-being, much to the amusement and astonishment of his classmates,” Teppner said.
In a poignant tribute to Alex’s compassionate spirit, the school announced the planting of a tree in his memory. Superintendent Mike Moore described the tree as a symbol of growth, resilience, and Alex’s lasting impact. “As the tree flourishes, its branches will remind us of Alex’s kindness, love, and the profound compassion he extended to others,” Moore explained.
Guy Louks, Alex’s father, expressed how much the community’s support has meant to his family during this incredibly difficult time. “The shared stories, memories, and outpouring of love have been a comfort to us and have helped answer many questions we had,” he said.
