TAMPA, Fla. — The family of Saifullah Kamel Musallet confirmed that the 20-year-old Palestinian-American was fatally beaten by Israeli settlers in the West Bank on Friday, where he had been visiting relatives. Musallet, who was preparing to return to Florida, was reportedly killed while attempting to defend his family’s land in Sinjil, situated north of Ramallah, as tensions escalate in the region.
Witnesses stated that Musallet was surrounded by settlers for over three hours, during which emergency medical services were blocked from reaching him. According to family members, his younger brother ultimately transported him to an ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries before they could reach a hospital. The Palestinian Health Ministry corroborated the family’s account, highlighting a continued pattern of violence against Palestinian families by settlers.
Local officials have expressed grave concerns about conflicts between settlers and Palestinian landowners, many of whom are American citizens. Mohammed Saber Zaben, the head of the municipality of al Sharqiya, reported that violent clashes have become commonplace, with multiple incidents of property damage and physical assaults directed at landowners. He believes these attacks are part of a broader strategy by settlers to establish unauthorized outposts on private land in the area, which is designated A and B under international law.
Family members painted a poignant picture of Musallet, emphasizing his warm personality and contributions to the family ice cream business in Tampa. His cousin, Fatmah Muhammad, described him as a well-loved figure who embodied kindness and compassion.
In the midst of escalating violence, another individual was also killed during the same confrontation, as detailed by the Palestinian Health Ministry, which noted that this victim was left unattended for several hours before succumbing to his injuries. The U.S. State Department has acknowledged the fatality of an American citizen in the West Bank and has pledged to provide consular assistance, while deferring further inquiries to Israeli officials.
The Israel Defense Forces stated they are investigating the incident alongside the Israel Police. However, Musallet’s family is urging the U.S. government to conduct its own investigation into his death and to hold those responsible accountable.
“We call on the U.S. State Department to initiate an immediate investigation into this tragedy and to hold the Israeli settlers accountable for their actions,” the family urged in a public statement. Both the FBI and the White House have refrained from commenting on the matter.
This incident marks a continued trend of violence in the West Bank, which has surged as Israeli settlers increasingly encroach on Palestinian territories. Musallet’s death is particularly significant as he becomes the fifth American killed in the West Bank since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The situation remains heated, with deep-seated tensions exacerbated by divergent U.S. policies regarding Israeli settlements. Policies that once upheld the illegality of such settlements have shifted under different administrations, indicating a fraught political landscape that complicates the path to peace. As the conflict continues to evolve, it raises questions about accountability, the safety of civilians, and the broader implications for U.S. involvement in the region.
