The 2-year-old was recorded walking alone before she was found unresponsive in an overgrown creek area, authorities said.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Police are seeking additional surveillance video as they investigate how a 2-year-old girl who wandered away from a Northwest Side home reached an overgrown, water-filled creek area where she was found unresponsive early Monday.
Aryana Trevino Martinez was pronounced dead shortly after 12:10 a.m. Monday, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. Her cause and manner of death had not been determined as of Tuesday, leaving investigators to reconstruct her movements during the roughly four hours between her disappearance and discovery.
Officers responded around 8 p.m. Sunday to the 4700 block of Allegheny Drive, near Babcock Road, after Aryana’s relatives reported that she had wandered away from home, according to a preliminary San Antonio Police Department report. Authorities established a search area and deployed several resources across the neighborhood.
Police said Aryana was found at about 12:01 a.m. in brush near the area where she was last seen. An investigator told KSAT that she was located in an overgrown creek area behind Belle Ellen Drive. She was unresponsive when officers reached her and was later pronounced dead.
Investigators have obtained video that appears to show Aryana walking alone through an alley before she was found, police said. Authorities are looking for more recordings from homes and businesses to determine whether she remained alone and to establish the route she took after leaving the residence.
Police have not said how Aryana left the property or how she entered the water-filled area. Investigators also have not announced whether they suspect criminal activity. No arrests or criminal charges had been reported, and officials have not identified anyone as a suspect.
An AMBER Alert was issued Sunday night as officers and residents searched the surrounding streets, alleys, yards and brush. The alert described Aryana as wearing a black top and leopard-print pants. It was canceled at about 3 a.m. Monday after she had been located.
Detectives and crime scene personnel continued gathering evidence and interviewing people in the neighborhood Monday. The medical examiner’s findings and the review of additional video are expected to help authorities determine what happened after Aryana disappeared.
The police investigation remained open Tuesday. Authorities had not released a timeline for completing the medical examination or announcing further findings.
