FARGO, N.D. — In a troubling escalation of violence, the Fargo Police Department has confirmed that a second victim is in critical condition following a brutal attack that occurred just hours after a fatal shooting nearby. The incidents, both occurring early Sunday morning, have raised concerns about public safety in the city, which has been grappling with rising crime.
During a press briefing on August 6, law enforcement officials detailed the sequence of events that unfolded around 3 a.m. The assault took place just three blocks away from the earlier shooting, where one man was killed and two others injured. Lt. Nate Nieman noted that investigators believe the two incidents are unrelated.
Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski stated that investigators are working to gather additional video evidence to aid in identifying the suspects involved in the assault. However, specific details about the case will remain under wraps until the suspects are apprehended. The initial response to the attack was complicated by the ongoing investigation into the earlier shooting, which significantly diverted police resources.
The day began with a call from a citizen reporting a person with severe injuries at approximately 3:07 a.m. Emergency services, including Sanford Ambulance and the Fargo Fire Department, quickly arrived. Capt. Tim Briggeman of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office revealed that deputies were initially told they were responding to an “uncooperative and unruly patient” when they arrived at the scene. By the time they got there, the victim was already on a stretcher, ready for transport.
The police became aware of the assault hours later, after the victim’s family contacted them inquiring if it was connected to the earlier shooting. A formal investigation began only after officials learned that the victim’s injuries were life-threatening on a subsequent day.
Briggeman explained the deputies’ limited follow-up once they facilitated the ambulance response, highlighting the confusion surrounding the severity of the victim’s condition at the time. He acknowledged the need for patience as an internal review of the deputies’ actions is underway. “Sheriff Jahner prides himself on transparency and accountability,” Briggeman stated, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to improving its processes amidst allegations of misconduct that have previously beset the sheriff’s department.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert. Zibolski reiterated the urgency of identifying those involved in the violent incidents. The police are also actively seeking information regarding the individual responsible for the earlier fatal shooting, urging the public to come forward with any relevant tips.
Community safety remains a paramount concern as Fargo residents seek answers and justice in light of these shocking events. The police department invites anyone with information to reach out through the dedicated line for tips, emphasizing the importance of public collaboration in tackling crime.
