Actor arrested in face shooting, campus lockdown follows

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ – A road rage incident spiraled into violence Thursday afternoon, leaving a woman injured and Stockton University on high alert. Ernest Hines, 46, from Port Republic, is facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault following the altercation.

The incident began at a red light on Jimmie Leeds Road. The victim, attempting to merge, was reportedly cut off by Hines. Witnesses say he yelled threats before firing a shot that hit the woman in the face.

Despite her injuries, she was able to describe Hines and his vehicle to the authorities, which proved crucial in his swift identification and arrest. She is currently hospitalized in stable condition.

Following the shooting, Hines fled onto the university campus, prompting a lockdown that lasted several hours as police ensured the safety of students and staff. The situation was tense but managed efficiently by law enforcement.

Hines was later apprehended at a residence in the Blue Heron Pines area. Although he did not cooperate with police, evidence gathered linked him to the crime.

Attempts to reach Hines’ family or confirm his legal representation have been unsuccessful. He is currently held in Atlantic County, awaiting a court appearance next week.

The incident has sparked a dialogue on campus security, with officials exploring measures to enhance safety and prevent future incidents. The community remains vigilant, with authorities encouraging the reporting of any suspicious activities.
