SEATTLE — An 88-year-old woman is sharing her harrowing experience of a violent assault that left her severely injured just steps from her home in the Rainier Beach neighborhood. Emma Cotton endured broken bones and the loss of a finger during the brutal attack on October 13.
Cotton, who turned to her faith and her family for support in the aftermath, recounted the frightening moments when the assailant confronted her on her porch. “It happened so suddenly,” Cotton said, reflecting on the incident. “I stepped outside, and before I knew it, he was there, throwing punches.”
Captured on surveillance footage, the assailant allegedly targeted Cotton for her jewelry, including her wedding ring. Despite the threat to her valuables, she prioritized her safety. “I told him he could have the rings. My life is more important than material things,” Cotton emphasized.
The struggle escalated when the attacker attempted to remove another ring. Cotton fought back fiercely, managing to scratch his face in a desperate effort to escape. “He had my hand in his mouth, but I wasn’t going to let him win,” she recounted, showcasing her resilience amid the chaos.
Despite her injuries—broken ribs, feet, and facial bones—Cotton managed to dial 911. The emotional toll of the attack lingers, yet she draws strength from her family and community. “The love I’ve received has fueled my spirit. I refuse to let this one incident rob me of my faith,” she remarked.
Cotton’s journey hasn’t just focused on recovery. In a surprising move, she expressed forgiveness toward her assailant. “I hope he finds a better path in life and gives back to the community instead of harming others,” she said. This compassionate outlook underscores a powerful message amid her suffering.
Resilient and determined, Cotton has returned to her church, using her experience to inspire others and further her mission of helping those in need. “I won’t let this define me. I want to continue making a difference,” she shared.
Meanwhile, local authorities continue to search for the assailant, with surveillance footage released to the public in hopes of identifying the suspect.
